Are you open to new members?
At the moment we are only open to new members who have successfully completed a level 2 kayak skills course with Canoeing Ireland either with us or with another club or provider. This is because we have limited instructor numbers at the moment, although this is something we are working on. We may from time to time run a level 2 kayak skills course in the club,
which will be advertised on social media, on the website, so if you’re interested please keep in touch with us.
Are you open for child memberships?
Not at the moment. It is something we would like to develop in the future as we get more instructors and resources in the club so keep an eye out. In the meantime, we will still run occasional taster sessions and activity camps for children on a one-off basis.
Do MBKC offer equipment hire?
No, the equipment available to the club is reserved for club members and club sessions only.
Do MBKC offer one-off trips?
We’re not a commercial club so we generally only organise member paddles and occasional taster sessions for non-members.
When is the next taster session or club intake?
Please keep an eye on the website and our social media outlets for information on this.
What is a taster session?
A taster session is a one-off session aimed at introducing people to paddlesports. We’ll do an introduction on the bank to the equipment before getting onto the canal for a short paddle and letting you get a feel for what it’s like to kayak. All equipment is provided – we have boats and paddles, wetsuits, flotation devices, and helmets for you to use.
I’m coming to a taster session or a level 2 course with you – what will I need to bring?
We have all the equipment you’ll need available for you to borrow, if you have your own wetsuit feel free to bring it. Make sure and bring some older clothes you don’t mind getting wet, including solid-soled footwear like runners. Don’t wear flipflops. Bring a change of clothes and a towel for
afterwards and a snack and hot drink is always welcome after a paddle.
Please let our instructors know if you have any medical needs we should be aware of and if you might need medicines in a first-aid situation please bring those along too.
I’ve been bitten by the bug, what next?
If you’ve been on a course or taster session with us then you too might have the bug. Don’t feel like you have to go buying all your own stuff – we’re very lucky to have everything needed for paddling for you to use. If you’re buying gear try to buy quality that will be comfortable and that
will last you. Please talk to one of our club members or leaders for advice.
